Six Steps Towards Eliminating Obsolete Controls Equipment

Everyone has that control panel lurking in the back of their minds.  Each time it’s opened, something breaks, so naturally don’t open it!  Don’t look at it or even breathe around it!  That’s the impression I get when I visit a lot of manufacturing facilities, and there is a big problem with this mindset…mainly that it won’t work forever. There is a reason why people don’t drive cars from 1985 every day and expect them to keep on chugging along forever, the same goes with the equipment we use to run our manufacturing facilities.

Before you get too upset about your ever-growing local taxes and municipal service bills, let’s look at some valid reasons for their increase. I’ll bet you never thought of how systems integration affects these bills. In fact, the poor state of some of our basic infrastructures has caused a rather large increase in the cost of some of the basic services we all take for granted, like water supply and sewage services. Both of these industries have been available to people and businesses for many years, and like most things, they are desperately in need of upgrades and repairs just to keep pace with the ever-increasing population.

The Learning Curve: Some Ways to Make It But NOT Fake It

Approaching my 1st anniversary at Avanceon, I was thinking about all of the new things I had learned over the course of the year. Nearly every day, I encountered new challenges. There were technologies that I had never worked with before and new programs that, at first seemed so foreign, the thought of mastering them seemed impossible. But here I am today, confident in my abilities to handle any sort of situation that may come my way. So, how did I get here? Did I just throw my hands up, walk away, and quit whenever I was stumped? Of course not. I’m an engineer. We’re problem solvers. So, for the next new engineer who comes along, I thought I’d put together a list of tips to help you get your bearings, by telling you what I did to find mine.
