A Fresh Perspective

I was recently watching a video on YouTube about an artist who would speed paint during the halftime of various NBA games. This painter stepped up to the canvas and, while music blared in the background, threw paint at the canvas with a variety of brushes and big strokes. While watching him frantically flail at his art, the viewer would look at the canvas and wonder “What is he doing? That doesn’t look like anything.” Finally, after a minute or two, he stepped back from his jumbled art, put down his brushes and admired the piece he worked so hard to complete quickly. It looked terrible! That was until he spun the painting upside down and revealed an amazing modern rendition of Albert Einstein’s portrait done perfectly in vibrant color. What struck me was the artist’s ability to look at something from a different perspective than the viewer, and create a successful outcome. Learning Never Ends

When I graduated from college, like any recent grad, I thought I knew everything I needed to know. After all, I had worked in different industries and with all types of personalities. What more did I need to learn? After getting my first “real job” I quickly found out that in order to get ahead in any career, you need to understand that learning new things is a MUST.  The more you know and the more resourceful you are, the more valuable you will be to your company, as well as confident with tackling any issue that may arise in the workplace.

It’s not all about flashing lights, bells, and whistles

Most customers will never care about your design logic with its perfect structure, adherence to precise standards, or excellent comments and description. Nor will they be aware of that magnificent script running oh-so-silently in the background and keeping their operations from falling into disarray. But they will see the Human Machine Interface, or HMI screens. Every person walking through that plant will see the HMI, whether they’re in the grade school tour group or the curious execs visiting from corporate.
