Learning Never Ends
When I graduated from college, like any recent grad, I thought I knew everything I needed to know. After all, I had worked in different industries and with all types of personalities. What more did I need to learn? After getting my first “real job” I quickly found out that in order to get ahead in any career, you need to understand that learning new things is a MUST. The more you know and the more resourceful you are, the more valuable you will be to your company, as well as confident with tackling any issue that may arise in the workplace.
In every job that I have ever had, I have been fortunate enough to expand my technical knowledge throughout many formats. In addition to my quest for self-improvement, there’s something about ‘creating and watching it work’ that has always appealed to me. So after 2 years in my marketing role – I got the urge again, to learn something new. Since I knew how to create and read code, I figured I’d start learning how automation really works and became an Engineer Intern for Avanceon.
As a result of this cross training and exposure, I got a better understanding of the in depth process standards that are used on every project, as well as hands on experience with PLC and HMI platforms.
But what if your workplace doesn’t offer the flexibility to cross-train in different departments? Or you simply don’t have time to enroll in formal classes?
Here are some online resources that can help you expand your knowledge both technically and mentally no matter what your schedule is:
– Skillshare: Online classes focusing on interaction rather than lecturing. Categories include: creative arts, design, entrepreneurship, lifestyle, technology, and many more.
– Udemy: An online learning platform aimed at professional adults. Courses are largely outfitted for improving job-related skills. As of 2018, there are more than 80,000 courses on the website.
– Lynda: An online learning platform that helps anyone learn business, software, technology and creative skills. Courses are taught by recognized industry experts.
